Biography:
Mario Mendias left Sul Ross State University during his junior year, 1968,
to volunteer for the U.S. Army. A native of Marfa, he played in the MHS
band , also played guitar and enjoyed riding horses.
He was killed March 2,1969, while serving with the Co. B, 1st BN, 22nd
Infantry , 1st Infantry Division. Serving as the point on a reconnaissance
in-force operation near Lai Khe , he sighted a well-fortified enemy
position, simultaneously warning his comrades. With complete disregard for
his own personal safety, he braved hostile fire as he neutralized one
enemy position with devastating automatic rifle fire while standing in the
aggressor killing zone. Undaunted by the enemy fusillade, he then threw
hand grenades to mark the position further. He was mortally wounded as he
attempted to move to a more secure position.
Specialist Mendias perseverance, self courage, and professionalism
significantly contributed to the successful accomplishment of his unit's
mission.
