Highlights
Robert Peck --- TOP GUN WINNER for 2002
Bill Worsham --- ISLAND CUP WINNER
Please congratulate Robert and Bill on their
recent racing accomplishments. See sections below for details.
Fall Thursday Evening Series is under way.
Marvin Campbell Long Distance Race Saturday,
October 5th Richard Hughes, RIC
Fall Olympic Regatta Saturday, October 12th
Paul Vera, RIC
One Design Round-Ups
Recall that these events are sailed in One-Design
boats - club Lasers - and that the TOP GUN winner is determined by the
Best overall finish for all Three of the ODR’s held this year. Eleven club
members participated in the three ODR’s.
The #3 ODR was sailed Saturday, September 14
with (5) sailors competing for the TOP GUN bragging rights. Sailing conditions
were sunny and hot with light and variable wind from generally the North
and Westerly direction making for a very challenging event. Five races
were sailed. Going into the last race, Bill Worsham and Robert Peck were
tied for the top spot at 7 points, Paul Vera and Robert LeBlanc tied at
15 points, and Mike Wise in close pursuit at 16 points. So...the last race
determined not only the winner of the #3 ODR but the overall TOP GN winner
as well. Finishes for the #3 ODR and the overall series are below.
As RIC, I also want to thank Carolyn and Bill
Worsham for offering their "Maine Cat 20" as the Race Committee Boat. It
was a lifesaver and ideal for the conditions. Also, Caroline, Chuck and
Marilee Devenzio and their friends Joe and Maryann Fitzgerald were critical
to meeting the constant need to alter the race course to meet the changing
race conditions as well as assisting with the overall race management.
The quality of racing would not have been as good as it was without these
folks volunteering their time and the supporting equipment. We also had
three lively 13-year old young ladies on board that assisted, as well as
keeping us entertained. Thanks to each of you for your ongoing support
of the club racing program.

Island Cup Regatta: Paul Vera and the many club
members working with him did another outstanding job of putting on a first
class regatta. From a racing perspective, 19 boats attended; (4) Monohulls,
(5) Thistles and (10) Catamarans participated. Three races were held Saturday
in light Northerly breezes and two on Sunday morning in 15+ winds making
for a full range of wind conditions on Lake Sabine.
Monohull Finishes:
(1) Bill Worsham
(2) Ken Rutty
(3) Robert Peck
(4) Jack Reed
Fall Thursday Evening Series: Sept. 5th races
were not held due primarily to the weather conditions. We will try to reschedule
this race for October 17th. Four boats sailed the September 12th race in
light air.
Finishes were:
(1) Russ Myer
(2) Ken Rutty
(3) Bill Worsham
(4) Robert Peck
The remaining races are September 26, October
3 & 10.
See ya on the water, Jim Kincaid

2002 RACE SCHEDULE
Dear PAYC Member
This year’s program has
something in it for everyone – Beginner, Skilled,
Young, and/or Mature. It
was put together by a group of club sailors that
will share in conducting
the program throughout the year and are willing
to help others grow in
their knowledge and skill of sailing and Racing.
The program has several
‘Learning’ Series events geared toward Family
participation …. if desired…and
learning racing fundamentals and the
finer points of sailing/racing
(One-Design Roundup’s and Regatta Olympic
Regatta’s – see write-up
elsewhere ). Many of these events are tied to the
Socials so it can be a
fun outing for everyone. If you enjoy sailing in the
evening we have three Thursday
evening Series that promise to be fun
and may be followed by
a pot-luck dinner. Paul Vera is leading the charge
on these. If you like the
cool of the night with the moon to sail by, join
in with someone for the
Moonlight Race in July. If offshore sailing/racing
gets your juices flowing,
Bill Worsham as some great things planned
here as well. Bob Peck,
Richard Hughes, and Ken Rutty are taking the
lead on the Long Distance
Races using various Lake Marks and will
offer some challenging
and fun sailing.
Attached is a Program Summary,
and Schedule. Pick out a few to try to
make and Find a spot on
the Refig to keep it handy…. Who knows, the
weather might just look
so inviting and there is something happening,
that you "just decide to
go sailing".
If you have questions, contact
me or any of the folks below.
See you "On-The-Water".

necessary resources to conduct the race or event, complete the scoring,
award ribbons, etc.
-
This person will receive 1 additional
point (to their number of boats beaten) toward the Danny Murphy trophy
for each race conducted in that event.
Olympic Regatta’s
These Club Regatta’s are open
to anyone wanting to race. They will also be open to non club boats for
a fee of $5.
-
Three to five races will be conducted
as a one-day regatta with US Sailing race instructions with an Around-The-Buoys

sailing/racing skills for the beginner as well as the skilled racer.
-

Individual Race finishes count
toward the Danny Murphy Trophy and Skipper of the Year.

-
Three to five races will be conducted
as a one-day regatta with US Sailing race instructions with an Around-The-Buoys
Course.
-
Races will be conducted as Learning
events with a Mini-Seminar (10 to 15 Min.) on a key aspect of sailing/racing
being conducted in conjunction with the Skippers meeting, and utilizing
an "Expert’s Roundtable*" following the races to enhance sailing/racing
skills for the beginner as well as the skilled racer.
-
Ribbons will be awarded to the
5 highest overall finishes in each class.
-
Overall Race finishes count toward
the Top Gun Trophy.
Racer-in-charge
The concept here is that the
person named will be the contact/lead person in charge of running that
race or event. This person will conduct the skippers meeting, secure the
necessary resources to conduct the race or event, complete the scoring,
award ribbons, etc.
-
This person will receive 1 additional
point (to their number of boats beaten) toward the Danny Murphy trophy
for each race conducted in that event.
* - Expert’s Roundtable
– This will be a panel of the top finishers answering questions from others
on how the top finishers started, and what they did on the course to finish
as well as they did, sail trim, team work, etc. The intent is to share
and learn together.
