COMMODORE'S COMMENTS
The next cruise will be to Shell Island on the 19th & 20th so be sure to check Bill’s article in this mainsheet for details. Also, be sure to check Jim’s article in this mainsheet for all of the details on the upcoming races. One thing that has been the subject of discussion at the last couple of meetings is the proposed one design program. The following contains details of the proposed one design program: The financing for the program would be a loan from PAYC to the one design program. The boats to be purchased would be Vanguard 15's, purchasing (6) for a total of $33,321.00 This loan would be repaid to the club in yearly installments over a ten year period or sooner depending on the number of members. Any PAYC member can join the one design program by paying a $200 initiation fee and $300 annual dues. We presently have (11) PAYC members ready to sign on to the program if this passes the general meeting. In addition, there are (2) non-members that want to sign on for the one design program that will become new PAYC members. This enables these people to join PAYC and then join the one design program and not have to buy a boat to sail. There are many other benefits to the club. For example, at another yacht club they have increased their membership and the junior memberships of their club from (14) junior members to over one-hundred members. Most of the Yacht Clubs along the Gulf Coast are starting some type of Vanguard program. This opens the door for many types of events as well as educational programs. These boats make excellent Father/Son or Husband and Wife boats. As a member of the one design program, you can sail the boats and race them in the one design regattas and races. It is my opinion that this program is a win - win deal for our club. This will bring us new members and add to the growth of PAYC. The money sounds like a lot however, it is only 1/3 of our capital funds and will be paid back to the club. In the event of a default on the loan, (which I do not see happening), the club would own the boats and they could be used as Junior Sailing boats or easily sold to another club or sold to individuals. There is a ballot in this mainsheet, vote for or against the one design program. PLEASE VOTE. See you sailing, Gary
